City of San Francisco uses Polara APS to make crosswalks accessible for blind pedestrians

Problem

San Francisco is retrofitting every signalized intersection in the city with APS. Because many San Francisco intersections have fixed traffic intervals, the APS must function at both actuated and pre-timed intersections. The city mandates Braille signage for pedestrians with vision disabilities; and to address future accessibility needs for those with mobility impairments, the city also requests APS have touchless activation.

 

Solution

Polara’s regional partner JAM Services Inc. assisted the city of San Francisco in their search for a versatile APS system with features to accommodate pedestrians of varying abilities. San Francisco selected Polara’s iDS2 APS, a flexible and versatile system compatible with the city’s existing infrastructure.

 

  • The iDS2 is uniquely flexible in installation, usable at either actuated or pre-timed intersections and installable with controllers in the signal heads (3-wire mode) or a controller in the cabinet (2-wire mode).
  • The sign attached to the iDS2 button includes a Braille plaque for blind pedestrians.
  • The iDetect® sensor uses radar to detect pedestrians at crossings, giving the city the option to provide touchless activation for pedestrians with mobility impairments

Outcome

San Francisco intends to continue retrofitting over 800 intersections with Polara APS throughout the next several years to equip blind and low vision pedestrians with the infrastructure they need to safely navigate the city.
