iDS/iNS ACCESSIBLE PEDESTRIAN SIGNAL
Transportation networks should be safe and accessible to everyone. With Polara’s industry-leading APS, they can be.

Choose your model:
iDS
The iDS model, built on the iNS platform, provides touchless iDetect activation with inconspicuous, weather-proof radar and an adjustable detection range of 1-20 inches.
iNS
Our industry-leading APS provides audible indications (tone and/or speech message) to blind and visually impaired pedestrians with the push of a button.
Features
Touchless actuation option
New iDS (iDetect) model provides touchless actuation with inconspicuous, weather-proof radar and an adjustable detection range of 1-20 inches.
Two- and three-wire installation
Two distinct models allow cities to easily upgrade both pre-timed and pedestrian actuated crosswalks to Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) without additional wires or wifi units.
Intuitive wireless programming
System settings, speech messages, and firmware updates can all be accessed and changed with the Polara Field Service App.
Rugged “Hall effect” button
The iDS/iNS features a rugged housing and ultra-durable Hall-effect switch that’s rated to more than 20 million operations.

Compatible with PedApp
Allows pedestrians to access audible information and remotely actuate push buttons from their smartphone.
Remote monitoring
Take advantage of third-party SNMP software to monitor the status of your iDS/iNS from any internet-connected device.
Bluetooth 5 connectivity
Button-to-button Bluetooth sync eliminates the need for external radios and trenching, with the added benefit of increased speed and range.
Extended button press
Customizable extended push settings allow pedestrians to access additional features like volume, direction of travel message, and more.
Multi-directional, customizable sound
Modular speaker emits sound from the front and back, with a variety of audio clips to choose from for walk, clearance, and don’t walk phases.
Compatible with preemption
The iDS/iNS is the only APS on the US market compatible with all major emergency vehicle, rail, and transit preemption services.

2- versus 3-wire: What’s the difference?
Polara’s APS comes in four models. The iDS2 and iNS2 are able to operate in either 2 or 3-wire installations; the iDS3 and iNS3 can only be used in 3-wire installations.
2-wire operation
- Operates over pre-existing 2-conductor button wires
- Connects to a control unit in the cabinet
- Great for upgrading existing call buttons to APS without running new wires
- Provides maximum features and performance
- Up to 16 buttons on up to 8 phases per intersection can be synchronized
3-wire operation
- Operates over a 3-conductor cable run up to the signal head
- Connects to a control unit in the signal head
- Great for upgrading intersections without existing button wires, or for adding APS without adding any controller to the cabinet
- Can be used with button wires for call activation
- Stand-alone system – nothing needed in the cabinet
- Secure wireless button synchronization via Bluetooth allows connection to existing 2-wire APS to avoid costly trenching

APS FAQs
What’s the difference between a 2- and 3-wire APS?
Broadly speaking, two-wire systems are designed for intersections where pedestrian signals and call buttons are already present, and three-wire systems are for intersections without them. A two-wire system installs in the traffic cabinet; a three-wire installs in the ped head. Learn more about Polara’s 2- versus 3-wire systems
What is the difference between the iDS and the iNS?
The iNS is our standard accessible crosswalk push button station. The iDS includes all of the quality and features of the iNS, plus it has iDetect, an intelligent radar motion-detection sensor for touchless activation.
What is the difference between the iDS2 and the iDS3 (or the iNS2 and iNS3)?
Polara’s APS comes in four models: the iDS2, iNS2, iDS3, and iNS3. The iDS2 and iNS2 can be installed to communicate with a control unit in the cabinet over 2 wires, or a control unit in the signal head over 3 wires (2-wire or 3-wire operation). The iDS3 and iNS3 are specifically for 3-wire installations, and cannot operate in 2-wire mode.
Can iDetect be used as a pedestrian detector for passive detection?
Although it was not developed for passive pedestrian detection, iDetect picks up pedestrian movements within its range.
Does the iDS support “Extended Pushbutton Press” features (2009 MUTCD §4E.13)?
Yes! The iDS can be configured to play an information message, increase volume on the selected crossing, and activate audio beaconing on an extended press of the button or an extended wave in front of the motion sensor.
Does the iNS support audible beaconing?
Yes! Polara’s iNS Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) support audible beaconing, which uses an additional speaker mounted at either end of the crosswalk to help pedestrians with blindness or limited vision properly orient themselves and cross an intersection directly and safely. Learn more about audible beaconing
Which products can communicate with "smart city" monitoring software/SNMP managers?
The 2-wire models of the iDS and iNS can be configured to send trap notifications via SNMP.
Is there a charge for having a custom message recorded for the iDS?
Polara records custom crossing messages for our customers without charge. Pre-installing custom audio on your unit may incur a fee; see your distributor for details.
What is the recording limit for custom messages, in seconds?
The length of the Walk interval is the primary limit for Walk messages. Informational messages should be kept to less than 60 seconds.
Does the iDS record how often the button is pressed so we can measure pedestrian volume?
The iDS does log push events, and those log files may be accessed with the Field Service App or networked devices.
Does the iDS support scramble or “Barnes Dance” intersections?
Yes. In a 2-wire system, all buttons would be assigned to the same phase. In a 3-wire system, the IDS can use Wireless Sync to synchronize all of the crosswalk buttons to the same phase; a single 2-conductor cable is run to one button to place calls into the cabinet if needed.
Can the iDS be mounted upside down to fit into awkward spaces?
No. Mounting the iDS upside down can allow moisture to collect inside the unit, and will void the warranty. In difficult installation locations, consider using one of our extended mounts, adapters, and mounting brackets.
What size conductors are required for the iDS 2-wire system?
Engineering recommendations is to use #14 for runs less than 300’, and #12 for run lengths greater than 300’.
Why should I upgrade to the iDS from my current iNavigators?
Besides our continual release of incremental improvements to make the iNS series the most reliable and feature-rich APS on the market, the iNS/iDS includes Bluetooth 5.0, which allows for the use of PedApp, Bluetooth Sync, and faster programming speeds. The iNS also improved transient protection over the iNavigator.
