Problem
The city of Calgary, AB is working to retrofit all its existing intersections with Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) as part of an ongoing initiative to increase accessibility for pedestrians with disabilities. Prior installations from other suppliers left many Calgary intersections with non-functioning APS and frequent service calls for technicians. The city needs durable, reliable APS buttons that are easy to install and require little maintenance.
Solution
Polara’s regional partner Tacel West worked with the city of Calgary to find a more dependable, robust APS solution. Calgary spent months conducting significant testing at various demonstration sites with Polara’s APS product. After successful testing, the city decided to move forward with the Polara iNS 2-wire APS solution.
- The iNS2 reduces button installation time in half with less wiring and components than previous product installations.
- The Field Service App allows the city to configure and program the buttons from a mobile device via Bluetooth connection.
- The city can monitor the status of buttons from any internet-connected device using the SNMP software – saving technician time.
- The iNS rugged housing and ultra-durable switch, rated to more than 20 million operations, ensures fault-proof performance for years to come.
Results
The city plans to convert its ~1,200 intersections to Polara APS over the next several years, including upgrading intersections with higher quality products and more accessibility features.
